Gerry & The Pacemakers - You’ll Never Walk Alone
In honor of Liverpool FC, who recently lost in the UEFA Champions League (that’s soccer), I have posted this tune. As their official anthem, this song originates from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical called Carousel and has been covered countless times. This best-known version was made in 1963 by the Liverpudlian group Gerry & The Pacemakers, who at the time of this recording were still considered rivals to the Beatles. I find it fascinating that in England, and elsewhere, entire stadiums sing this song in unison, while in the U.S. we are bombarded with Crazy Train and Welcome to the Jungle. Pink Floyd actually samples a Liverpool crowd singing this on the song Fearless off the 1971 album Meddle. Pretty sappy, but kinda good.
